Our Brent customers are spread from Main Street to the AL-5 corridor and out around the Cahaba River, and we serve the surrounding Bibb County communities on the same schedule.
Between the established parts of Brent and the newer subdivisions, we see two different kinds of failure: worn-out frames on one side of town and worn-out hardware on the other.

These are the door lock repair faults we are called out to most often in Brent. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- Corrosion visible around the cylinder faceSalt or moisture attacking the internals, which will seize the lock if it is not addressed.
- The key only works if you lift or lean on the doorThe bolt is binding in the strike because the door is sitting low in the opening.
- The deadbolt only throws if you pull the doorClassic strike misalignment from a door or frame that has shifted.
- The lock is loose and spins in the doorBacked-out through bolts or an oversized bore that no longer holds the hardware square.
- The latch does not retract when you turn the handleFailed spindle, broken spring cassette or a seized latch bolt.
- Two locks on the same door need different keysMismatched cylinders from a previous partial replacement, easily re-keyed to one key.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Why door lock repair fails in west Alabama
West Alabama collects a lot of rain, and it comes in hard bursts. Doors here fail at the bottom first, where water sits against the sweep and the end grain.
Continuous humidity swells a wood door in its frame, and a swollen door puts the deadbolt slightly out of line with its strike, so the lock takes side load every time it is thrown and eventually the mechanism gives up.
Pressure from a storm line pushes a door against its stop and holds the latch bolt under load, and repeatedly forcing a lock in that state wears the latch and the strike far faster than normal use ever would.
It is why the same repair done properly in Brent lasts, and the same repair done cheaply does not.
Local factors we account for in Brent: sustained humidity and storm wind — typical of west Alabama.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895How we approach door lock repair
- Watch the bolt meet the strikeWe close the door slowly and see where the bolt lands. Most lock complaints are alignment complaints.
- Work from the key inwardThe key, then the cylinder, then the tailpiece, then the latch. Testing in order stops us replacing parts that were fine.
- Correct what movedIf the door has dropped or the frame has shifted, that gets fixed first. Filing the strike to fit a moved door just buys a few months.
- Fit hardware that suits the doorWeight, thickness, backset and exposure all matter, and exterior hardware in this part of Alabama needs the right finish to survive.
- Set the throw and the engagementThe bolt should extend fully with the door closed and no hand pressure on it, and the latch should catch without a push.
- Test every key in every lockIncluding the spares. Keys that were cut from copies are a common cause of a lock that feels rough. Across west Alabama we check the frame anchorage carefully, because seasonal soil movement works fixings loose over time.

Every door lock repair call in Bibb County is a little different, and the cost follows what the door actually needs:
- whether the lock can be rebuilt or needs full replacement
- the number of doors being keyed alike
- commercial hardware requirements like fire ratings and lever functions
- the grade and finish of the hardware you choose
- whether it is a standard bored lock or a mortise case

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door lock repair in Brent: questions we get asked
The lock is fine but the door will not stay shut. What is happening?
The latch is not fully engaging the strike, so the door rests closed but is not actually latched. That is an alignment fix and it is worth doing quickly, because a door in that state offers almost no security.
Should I use a single or double cylinder deadbolt?
A double cylinder needs a key on both sides, which stops someone reaching through broken glass but also slows down anyone trying to get out in an emergency. For most Brent homes with glass near the door, we would rather reinforce the glass and the frame and keep a single cylinder inside.
Why do my locks work loose every few months?
Either the through bolts are backing out from door movement, or the bore has worn oversized. Both are fixable, but if it keeps happening the door itself is probably moving more than it should.
Can you make all my doors use one key?
Yes. Keying alike is straightforward as long as the cylinders are compatible, and for most Brent homes with a front door, back door and garage entry it makes daily life a lot simpler.
How do I stop my exterior lock from freezing?
Keep moisture out of the cylinder. In Bibb County the freezes that cause it come with damp air, and a dry lubricant plus a functioning door sweep and drip cap does more good than anything you can put in the keyway after the fact.
My deadbolt only locks if I lift the door. Is the lock broken?
Probably not. That is the classic sign the door has dropped on its hinges or the frame has shifted, so the bolt is hitting the strike plate instead of entering it. In Brent we see this constantly, and the fix is usually hinge and strike work rather than new hardware.
