Exterior Door Repair — Egypt, Alabama

We cover Egypt and the rest of Etowah County, from the US-411 corridor across to the Coosa River, and we are out this way often enough that Altoona and Gadsden are on the same run.

The mix of housing here matters for door work. Older Egypt homes have wood frames and hardware worth repairing rather than replacing, while newer construction tends to have vinyl and aluminum systems where the moving parts wear out long before anything else does.

What Egypt customers call us about

These are the exterior door repair faults we are called out to most often in Egypt. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.

  • Drafts you can feel from across the roomCompressed seals and a threshold no longer meeting the door bottom.
  • Soft wood at the bottom of the door or jambRot from standing water; the sooner it is caught the smaller the repair.
  • The door bottom drags on the thresholdHinge sag or a threshold adjusted too high.
  • The door is tight in the morning and loose by eveningA door absorbing moisture overnight and drying through the day, which points to an unsealed edge.
  • Insects getting in around the doorGaps at the sweep and threshold, and often moisture-damaged wood attracting them.
  • Sidelight or transom glass has foggedFailed insulated units in the fixed panels beside the door.

Egypt conditions and exterior door repair

The foothills get real cold snaps and real heat, and the ground moves with them. Rocky, uneven fill under older slabs means door frames rarely stay perfectly square for a decade.

Soil movement under an entry racks the frame, and the tell is a door that seals fine along one edge and shows a widening gap at the opposite corner, which is not something weatherstrip will fix.

Freezes make exterior weatherstrip brittle, and a compressed, brittle seal stops recovering its shape, so the door that sealed acceptably last winter has visible daylight around it this one.

We factor that in on every exterior door repair job around the Coosa River valley and the rest of Egypt.

Local factors we account for in Egypt: soil movement and winter freezes — typical of the Appalachian foothills.

How we approach exterior door repair

  1. Check it in the closed position firstAn exterior door only has to work in one position. We look at how it sits shut before we look at how it swings.
  2. Follow the waterStaining, rot and rust all point uphill to an entry point. We find that before repairing anything downstream of it.
  3. Get the door sitting right in its openingEven contact all round is what makes a seal work. Uneven contact is why the last set of weatherstrip failed.
  4. Fit hardware and seals rated for exposureThe finish and material matter on an exterior door in this climate, and cheap components fail fast. Foothill jobs get assessed for wind loading, because doors here take gusts that flatten seals unevenly.
  5. Make the lock work without forceThe deadbolt should throw fully with the door simply closed. If you are leaning on it, the geometry is still wrong.
  6. Check the finish and the edgesTop and bottom edges get sealed, because unsealed end grain is the fastest way back to a warped door.

What affects the cost of exterior door repair in Egypt

We would rather tell you what drives the price than quote a number that turns out to be wrong once we see the door. On a exterior door repair job in Egypt, the main variables are these:

  • weatherstrip and threshold work versus structural repair
  • whether the frame has rot that needs splicing
  • security reinforcement and hardware upgrades
  • sidelight and transom glass replacement
  • whether water management details also need correcting

Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Egypt.

Exterior door repair in Egypt: questions we get asked

My steel door is rusting at the bottom. Do I need a new door?

Not necessarily. Steel door bottoms can be rebuilt, and the real issue is why water is sitting there. If the frame and skin above are sound, the repair is worth doing.

I can see daylight around my front door. Is that just weatherstrip?

Sometimes, but check whether the gap is even. A consistent gap all the way around is a weatherstrip job. A gap that is wide at one corner and tight at another means the door or frame has moved, and new weatherstrip will not close it.

Is my front door secure enough?

The weak point on most entry doors is not the lock, it is the strike. A deadbolt in a strike plate held by short screws into thin jamb material offers much less than people assume. Reinforcing it is inexpensive.

Why does my front door stick in summer and not in winter?

Seasonal movement in the door and the frame. In Egypt's humid months a wood door takes on moisture and grows slightly, and a door that already had tight clearance starts binding.

Can you fix a front door that has warped?

Depends on how far. Mild warping can often be handled with hinge and strike adjustment and better weatherstrip. Severe warping on a solid wood slab usually means replacing the slab, which can be hung in the existing frame.

Should I add a storm door to my entry?

It helps with weather and with keeping the door itself out of direct sun and rain, which extends the life of the finish. On a door that already gets full afternoon sun in Egypt, it is worth considering.
