Common door lock repair faults in Butler County

These are the door lock repair faults we are called out to most often in Georgiana. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.

  • The deadbolt only throws if you pull the doorClassic strike misalignment from a door or frame that has shifted.
  • The keyed sliding door handle will not lockThe panel has dropped and the hook latch no longer reaches the keeper.
  • The lock freezes up in cold weatherMoisture inside the cylinder, common on exterior doors going through a hard freeze.
  • The knob turns but the door stays shutBroken internal linkage between the knob and the latch.
  • The mortise lock has stopped working entirelyInternal case failure; on older doors this is a rebuild rather than a swap.
  • The lock works loose again a few weeks after tighteningAn oversized or out-of-round bore letting the chassis rotate under normal use.

What Georgiana weather does to door lock repair

Sandy soil here drains fast but also shifts, and blowing sand is a constant presence in sliding door tracks and screen channels.

Heat expands a metal door and its frame through the afternoon, and on a west-facing entry the deadbolt can throw perfectly at breakfast and bind against the strike by evening, which is a thermal problem rather than a hardware one.

Pressure from a storm line pushes a door against its stop and holds the latch bolt under load, and repeatedly forcing a lock in that state wears the latch and the strike far faster than normal use ever would.

Knowing that is the difference between a repair that holds through a Georgiana summer and one that does not.

Local factors we account for in Georgiana: sun and heat load and storm wind — typical of the Wiregrass.

How a Georgiana door lock repair visit works

  1. Ask when it changedA lock that failed overnight and a lock that got worse over a year are different problems, and the answer narrows it immediately.
  2. Isolate the failureCylinder, latch, linkage or strike. We test each one with the door open so nothing masks anything else.
  3. Fix the cause, not the symptomIf the frame has moved, we correct the strike or the hinge side rather than shimming a lock into a bad opening. Sandy-soil jobs get their running surfaces cleaned out thoroughly, because new rollers fitted into a gritty track will not last a year.
  4. Fit hardware that suits the doorWeight, thickness, backset and exposure all matter, and exterior hardware in this part of Alabama needs the right finish to survive.
  5. Set and adjustThe bolt should throw completely with the door closed and no pressure applied by hand.
  6. Leave the keying tidyWhere a door has picked up mismatched cylinders over the years, we re-key so one key does the job.

What affects the cost of door lock repair in Georgiana

What a door lock repair job costs comes down to a handful of things, and we would rather be straight about them up front:

  • whether the lock can be rebuilt or needs full replacement
  • whether it is a standard bored lock or a mortise case
  • commercial hardware requirements like fire ratings and lever functions
  • whether the frame or strike also needs correction
  • the grade and finish of the hardware you choose

Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Georgiana.

Door lock repair in Georgiana: questions we get asked

My deadbolt only locks if I lift the door. Is the lock broken?

Probably not. That is the classic sign the door has dropped on its hinges or the frame has shifted, so the bolt is hitting the strike plate instead of entering it. In Georgiana we see this constantly, and the fix is usually hinge and strike work rather than new hardware.

Should I use a single or double cylinder deadbolt?

A double cylinder needs a key on both sides, which stops someone reaching through broken glass but also slows down anyone trying to get out in an emergency. For most Georgiana homes with glass near the door, we would rather reinforce the glass and the frame and keep a single cylinder inside.

The lock is fine but the door will not stay shut. What is happening?

The latch is not fully engaging the strike, so the door rests closed but is not actually latched. That is an alignment fix and it is worth doing quickly, because a door in that state offers almost no security.

A key broke off in my lock. Can it be saved?

Usually. We extract the broken piece and check the cylinder, but the reason keys break is that the lock was already stiff, so we look at what caused that rather than just handing back a new key.

Are the locks on my sliding door worth upgrading?

The factory latch on most patio doors is minimal. Adding a foot bolt or an auxiliary track lock is inexpensive and makes a real difference, and it also takes some strain off a latch that may already be marginal.

Why do my locks work loose every few months?

Either the through bolts are backing out from door movement, or the bore has worn oversized. Both are fixable, but if it keeps happening the door itself is probably moving more than it should.

Not sure whether it is a repair or a replacement?Describe the symptoms and we will give you a straight answer.
