These are the window repair faults we are called out to most often in Marion. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- The window is painted shutCommon on older wood windows and reversible with careful work.
- Water pools on the sill track and does not clearBlocked weep slots. Water that cannot leave the track finds its way inside.
- The screen is torn or missingRescreening or a replacement screen panel.
- A slider window that is hard to moveWorn rollers and a dirty track.
- The sash will not stay upFailed balances or a broken sash cord on an older window.
- Fogging between the panesThe insulated glass seal has failed and moisture is inside the unit.

The wet winter and dry late-summer cycle here is severe enough that a door adjusted perfectly in February can bind badly by September.
Structural movement racks window openings, and a window that will not lock anymore is often a window whose sash is no longer parallel with its frame because the wall moved.
High humidity saturates the desiccant in a sealed glass unit quickly once its seal has begun to fail, and it also keeps wood sashes at a moisture content where rot can get started.
We factor that in on every window repair job around the Perry County Courthouse and the rest of Marion.
Local factors we account for in Marion: soil movement and sustained humidity — typical of the Black Belt.

- Establish the type before the faultDouble hung, casement, slider, awning and fixed all fail differently, and the diagnosis follows the type.
- Test each moving part separatelyBalances, operator, hinges and lock get checked independently so one stiff component does not disguise another.
- Check the drainageWeep holes and sill drainage get checked on any window with water intrusion, because that is usually the cause.
- Repair rather than replace where it makes senseFrames and glass usually outlast hardware by decades, and hardware is replaceable.
- Reseal properlyCorrect sealant on a clean, sound surface, and glazing set with the right blocking so the unit is supported rather than pinched.
- Test operation and lock engagementThe sash should move with light effort, stay where it is put, and lock without being pulled into position. We note the reveal measurements on clay-soil jobs so that if it shifts again there is a baseline to compare against.

What a window repair job costs comes down to a handful of things, and we would rather be straight about them up front:
- single window versus several in one visit
- wood repair and rot splicing where the frame is damaged
- screen work alongside the window repair
- commercial glazing and access requirements
- glass unit size, tempering and low-E coatings
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Marion.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Window repair in Marion: questions we get asked
How long does window repair take?
Balance, hardware and screen work is usually under an hour per window. Glass unit replacement takes a measuring visit and then a fitting visit once the unit is made.
My window will not stay open. What is broken?
The balances. On a double hung window they counterweight the sash, and when one fails the sash drops. It is a replaceable part and far cheaper than a new window.
How do I stop condensation on my windows in winter?
Some of it is indoor humidity rather than the window. But if the glass surface is cold enough to condense heavily, the unit may have failed. In Marion it is worth checking whether the moisture is on the surface or between the panes.
Can painted-shut windows be opened again?
Usually yes, with care. It takes patience to cut the paint seal without damaging the sash or the stops, but old windows in Marion homes are often perfectly serviceable once freed.
Water is coming in at my window sill. What causes that?
Usually blocked weep holes. Windows are designed to collect water in the frame and drain it out, and when those drains clog it backs up and comes inside instead.
Why will my window not lock anymore?
The sash has dropped or shifted, so the lock and keeper no longer meet. Forcing it can break the lock, and the actual fix is usually alignment rather than new hardware.
