Our territory takes in Newton and the communities around it in Dale County, so calls from Main Street, the AL-123 corridor and out by the Choctawhatchee River all get the same response.
Newton has enough older housing stock that repair almost always beats replacement here, and enough new construction that we spend a lot of time on hardware that failed early.

- Grinding or gritty feel when you turn itDebris or corrosion inside the mechanism.
- The lever droops and will not return levelFailed return spring inside the handle body.
- The exterior handle on the sliding door has snappedCommon on old patio doors where the pull is a thin casting under years of load.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Why door handle repair fails in the Wiregrass
Sandy soil here drains fast but also shifts, and blowing sand is a constant presence in sliding door tracks and screen channels.
Grit works into the space between the handle rose and the door face and into the latch mechanism, and once it is in there the handle feels gritty to turn and the internal spring is wearing every time it moves.
Water running down a door face gets behind the exterior rose and sits against the latch mechanism, which rusts the spring cassette and is why exterior handles fail far more often than interior ones.
We factor that in on every door handle repair job around the Choctawhatchee River and the rest of Newton.
Local factors we account for in Newton: blowing sand and heavy rainfall — typical of the Wiregrass.

- Work out whether it is the handle or the latchThey feel similar from the outside. Turning the handle with the door open tells us immediately which part has failed.
- Check the door and strike alignmentA latch dragging on the strike puts load through the handle mechanism and is a common reason handles fail early.
- Repair where repair is honestSprings, spindles and roses are replaceable. We say so rather than selling a set when a spindle would do.
- Fit correctly to the doorRight backset, right bore, hardware sitting square and pulled up tight to both faces.
- Adjust the latch engagementThe door should close and latch with a light push, not a shove.
- Check every handle in the runIf one handle in a house or building has worn out, we look at the others while we are there. Sandy-soil jobs get their running surfaces cleaned out thoroughly, because new rollers fitted into a gritty track will not last a year.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of door handle repair in Newton
What a door handle repair job costs comes down to a handful of things, and we would rather be straight about them up front:
- the grade and finish of the hardware chosen
- repair of the existing set versus full replacement
- keyed versus non-keyed function
- commercial grade requirements on high-use doors
- whether the bore or backset needs correction

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door handle repair in Newton: questions we get asked
Do I need to replace the lock to replace the handle?
Not necessarily. On a keyed entry set they are integrated, but on many doors the handle and the deadbolt are separate and you can change one without touching the other.
My lever handle droops. Can that be repaired?
Yes, usually. The return spring inside the handle body has failed. On decent hardware we can replace the spring cassette; on thin builder-grade sets it is often cheaper to fit a better handle than to rebuild a weak one.
Why does my door rattle after a new handle was fitted?
The new latch is probably sitting at a slightly different depth than the old one, so the strike no longer holds the door tight. Adjusting the strike fixes it in a few minutes.
Can you fix an old mortise handle set on a historic door?
Often yes. Old mortise sets were built to be serviced, and the original hardware is usually better made than any replacement. We would rather rebuild it than gut a door for a modern set.
The handle turns but the door will not open. What is wrong?
The connection between the handle and the latch has broken, usually the spindle or the internal drive. If somebody is stuck behind that door, say so when you call and we will treat it accordingly.
Can you match new handles to my existing hardware?
In most cases. Finish families are reasonably consistent between brands, and for Newton homes where the hinges and locks are staying, matching the handle finish is usually straightforward.
