Our territory takes in Opelika and the communities around it in Lee County, so calls from Downtown Opelika, the Railroad Avenue district and out by the Lee County Courthouse all get the same response.
A lot of what we see in Lee County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.

These are the door hinge repair faults we are called out to most often in Opelika. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- Cracks in the jamb around the hinge mortiseThe jamb material has split under the load.
- Screw heads sitting proud of the leafThe screws are bottoming out in stripped holes and holding nothing.
- Knuckles worn oval and the pin is looseEnd of hinge life, usually on a heavy or high-use door.
- The door swings open or shut on its ownThe hinges are out of plumb, so gravity is doing the work.
- Two hinges look fine and one is chewed upLoad concentrated on a single hinge because the others are shimmed or set at different depths.
- Rust has locked the pin in placeUntreated steel hinges on an exposed opening, which will keep seizing until they are replaced.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Why door hinge repair fails in east central Alabama
Spring storm lines come through fast here and put a lot of wind pressure on doors before the rain even starts.
Damp jamb material loses its grip on screw threads, and a hinge screw that was tight in a dry jamb starts to spin once the wood around it has been at high moisture content for a couple of seasons.
A gust catching an open door and slamming it against its stop puts an enormous shock load through the top hinge, and that single event is often what starts a sag that develops over the following months.
It is why the same repair done properly in Opelika lasts, and the same repair done cheaply does not.
Local factors we account for in Opelika: sustained humidity and storm wind — typical of east central Alabama.

- Measure the reveal all roundThe gap pattern around a sagging door points straight at which hinge has given up.
- Check what the screws are anchored intoMost repeat hinge failures are fastener failures, and that means finding the framing behind the jamb. Jobs in this part of the state get their weatherstrip assessed for heat and cold, since both extremes show up here.
- Rebuild the anchorageWhere the screws no longer bite, we fill and re-drill so the fixings reach solid material, then fit long screws into framing.
- Size the hinge to the doorA solid or fire-rated door needs hinges rated for its weight. Three light hinges on a heavy slab will always sag again.
- Re-hang and check the revealAn even gap top to bottom, latch side and hinge side, before we go anywhere near the lock.
- Confirm the latch and lock still line upMoving a door on its hinges changes where the latch lands, so the strike gets checked too.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door hinge repair in Opelika: questions we get asked
Will fixing the hinges fix my latching problem?
Frequently. A door that has dropped on its hinges puts the latch below the strike. Bringing the door back to position often means the lock works again with no other work.
My door is sagging. Do I need a new door?
Almost never. A sagging door is a hinge problem, usually the top hinge losing its grip on the jamb. Once the fasteners are anchored into the framing properly the door comes back up and latches again.
How do I know which hinge is the problem?
Look at the gap between the door and the frame down the latch side. If it is tight at the top and wide at the bottom, the top hinge has pulled. That is the one carrying the most load and it fails first.
Why do my hinge screws keep coming loose?
Because they are only holding into jamb material, which is often less than an inch of soft wood. Long screws driven into the structural framing behind the jamb solve it permanently.
Do heavy doors need special hinges?
Yes. Solid core, exterior and commercial doors, and any door with a closer on it, should be on ball bearing hinges. Plain butt hinges on a heavy door wear out fast and take the jamb with them.
Can hinges be repaired or do they have to be replaced?
Pins, tips and lubrication problems are repairable. Once the knuckles have worn oval and the hinge has play in it, it is done and needs replacing, and putting a new pin in a worn hinge does not help.
