Ragland is part of our regular St. Clair County territory, and between Main Street, the AL-144 corridor and the Neely Henry Lake area we are here most weeks.
Between the established parts of Ragland and the newer subdivisions, we see two different kinds of failure: worn-out frames on one side of town and worn-out hardware on the other.
Not sure whether it is a repair or a replacement?Describe the symptoms and we will give you a straight answer.

These are the door frame repair faults we are called out to most often in Ragland. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- Soft or crumbling wood at the bottom of the jambRot from water that has been sitting at the threshold, usually for years before it shows.
- A hinge screw goes in but never gets tightThe screw is turning in decayed wood or in an over-drilled hole with nothing left to bite.
- Gaps between the jamb and the wallThe frame has pulled loose from the framing behind it, or the fasteners have lost their grip.
- Fresh paint blisters at the jamb foot within a seasonMoisture driving out from inside the timber, which means the source has not been dealt with.
- The frame moves when the door slamsThe frame is no longer solidly fastened to the rough opening.
- Interior trim pulling away from the wallMovement in the frame or the wall behind it.
Tell us what the door is doing and we will tell you what it needs. No guesswork over the phone, no pressure.

Storms coming off the ridges dump a lot of water in a short time, and any door with a compromised threshold pan will show it on the floor inside.
Water that soaks into an unsealed jamb bottom and then freezes expands inside the grain, and each freeze opens the wood a little more, which is why frame rot accelerates through winter rather than through the wet season.
Wind-driven rain hits a frame horizontally and finds the joint between the brickmould and the siding, which is where water gets behind the frame and does damage that is invisible until the jamb goes soft.
We see the pattern often enough across St. Clair County that we usually know what we are looking at before we arrive.
Local factors we account for in Ragland: winter freezes and storm wind — typical of the Appalachian foothills.

- Find out what moved and whyWe check plumb, level and square across the opening and look for the cause, because a frame that is out of square because the foundation moved will go out of square again.
- Probe the full extent of the decaySound wood at the surface can hide a rotten core. We probe until we find solid material, because guessing means doing it twice.
- Choose repair or replacement honestlyIf splicing gets you a solid frame we splice. If the damage runs into the framing behind it, we tell you that instead of covering it.
- Rebuild in material that survives hereTreated timber, composite or a full jamb depending on exposure. Untreated pine at a wet sill is a repair with an expiry date.
- Reset the door to the repaired frameConsistent reveal, correct hinge alignment and a latch that engages without pressure. In the foothills we check exposure on each elevation, since a door on the weather side ages at a completely different rate to one that is sheltered.
- Finish the detail that failedDrip caps, end grain and the joint at the sill get the attention, because that is where the last failure began.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of door frame repair in Ragland
What a door frame repair job costs comes down to a handful of things, and we would rather be straight about them up front:
- how far the rot or damage extends into the frame and framing
- whether the threshold and sill pan also need rebuilding
- wood versus hollow metal frames on commercial openings
- interior versus exterior frames, since exterior work includes weatherproofing
- whether the frame can be spliced or has to be replaced
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Ragland.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door frame repair in Ragland: questions we get asked
Can a rotted door frame be repaired, or do I need a whole new door?
In most cases the frame can be repaired and the door reused. We cut out the decayed section back to sound wood and splice in new material. Replacing the whole unit only makes sense when the rot has reached the framing behind the jamb.
Can you fix a frame without disturbing the interior trim?
Usually. Most frame repairs can be done from the outside or from the door edge without pulling casing off the wall, which matters if the trim is original or the walls have just been painted.
Is it worth repairing a frame on an old house?
Usually very much so. Old growth jamb material is better than most of what you can buy now, and splicing preserves the original profile and casing rather than replacing it with a modern lookalike.
How long does a door frame repair take?
A straightforward jamb splice or strike rebuild in Ragland is a few hours. A full frame replacement with new threshold and flashing is most of a day. Structural movement that has to be addressed first can add to that.
The head of my door frame sags. Is that serious?
It can be. A sagging head jamb often means the header above the opening is carrying load it should not be. We look at that before doing cosmetic work, because the door is telling you something about the structure.
Why does my door bind at just one corner?
The frame is out of square. In Ragland that is usually the house moving, and the corner that binds tells us which direction it moved. Planing the door to fit hides it for a season but does not fix it.
