Exterior and Front Door Repair in Slocomb, AL

An exterior door has to do three jobs at once: keep weather out, keep people out, and open easily every day. When it starts failing at one of them it is usually already failing at the others.

Exterior Door Repair — Slocomb, Alabama

We know Slocomb well: the older housing around Main Street, the newer construction toward the AL-52 corridor, and everything out past the Slocomb tomato fields.

Slocomb has enough older housing stock that repair almost always beats replacement here, and enough new construction that we spend a lot of time on hardware that failed early.

The exterior door repair problems we see most in Slocomb

These are the exterior door repair faults we are called out to most often in Slocomb. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.

  • Sidelight or transom glass has foggedFailed insulated units in the fixed panels beside the door.
  • Peeling finish on a wood front doorUV and weather exposure, often on a door with no overhang protection.
  • The deadbolt does not throw fullyStrike misalignment, and a security problem until it is fixed.
  • Water on the floor inside after rainFailed sweep, threshold or sill pan, or missing drip cap above the door.
  • Soft wood at the bottom of the door or jambRot from standing water; the sooner it is caught the smaller the repair.
  • Drafts you can feel from across the roomCompressed seals and a threshold no longer meeting the door bottom.

Slocomb conditions and exterior door repair

Sandy soil here drains fast but also shifts, and blowing sand is a constant presence in sliding door tracks and screen channels.

Full sun on a front door destroys finishes, particularly on south and west elevations, and once the finish fails on a wood door the water gets in and the real damage starts.

Wind-driven rain hits an entry door horizontally, which defeats seals that would handle vertical rain without difficulty, and the water gets in at the top corners and behind the brickmould.

It is why the same repair done properly in Slocomb lasts, and the same repair done cheaply does not.

Local factors we account for in Slocomb: sun and heat load and storm wind — typical of the Wiregrass.

Our exterior door repair process

  1. Check it in the closed position firstStanding inside with the lights off and looking for daylight tells us more in ten seconds than any amount of measuring.
  2. Find where the water goesMost exterior door failures are water failures. We look at the threshold, the sill pan, the drip cap and the ground level outside.
  3. Correct the geometry before the sealsWeatherstrip cannot seal a door that is not sitting square. Hinges, reveal and threshold come first.
  4. Fit for the exposureStainless fixings, marine-grade or coated hardware and the correct sweep, depending on how much weather the opening takes.
  5. Make the lock work without forceThe deadbolt should throw fully with the door simply closed. If you are leaning on it, the geometry is still wrong. Sandy-soil jobs get their running surfaces cleaned out thoroughly, because new rollers fitted into a gritty track will not last a year.
  6. Check it under a hoseWhere water has been getting in, we test the repair rather than assuming it worked.

What affects the cost of exterior door repair in Slocomb

We would rather tell you what drives the price than quote a number that turns out to be wrong once we see the door. On a exterior door repair job in Slocomb, the main variables are these:

  • the material of the door: wood, fiberglass or steel
  • security reinforcement and hardware upgrades
  • weatherstrip and threshold work versus structural repair
  • whether water management details also need correcting
  • whether the frame has rot that needs splicing

Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Slocomb.

Exterior door repair in Slocomb: questions we get asked

Water comes in under my front door when it rains hard. Why?

The sweep and threshold are not sealing, and often the sill pan underneath has failed or was never there. In Geneva County the rain comes in hard and sideways, so the seal has to work under pressure.

Can you fix a front door that has warped?

Depends on how far. Mild warping can often be handled with hinge and strike adjustment and better weatherstrip. Severe warping on a solid wood slab usually means replacing the slab, which can be hung in the existing frame.

Why does my front door stick in summer and not in winter?

Seasonal movement in the door and the frame. In Slocomb's humid months a wood door takes on moisture and grows slightly, and a door that already had tight clearance starts binding.

The bottom of my wooden front door is rotting. Can it be saved?

Often yes, if it is caught early enough. The bottom rail can be repaired and the door refinished. What matters more is fixing the water that caused it, or the repair rots out the same way.

I can see daylight around my front door. Is that just weatherstrip?

Sometimes, but check whether the gap is even. A consistent gap all the way around is a weatherstrip job. A gap that is wide at one corner and tight at another means the door or frame has moved, and new weatherstrip will not close it.

How long does exterior door repair take?

Weatherstrip, threshold and alignment work is usually a few hours. Rot repair and frame work takes longer, and we will tell you which one you are looking at before we start.
