We know Troy well: the older housing around Downtown Troy, the newer construction toward the university district, and everything out past Troy University.
Door problems in Troy tend to sort into two groups: older homes where the frames and jambs have taken decades of weather, and newer builds where the hardware was the cheapest part of the package and has already given up.

- The closer arm is bentThe door has been forced open past its stop, usually by wind or by a cart.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What Troy weather does to door closer repair
Sandy soil here drains fast but also shifts, and blowing sand is a constant presence in sliding door tracks and screen channels.
Direct sun heats a closer body and thins its fluid, so a door on a sunny elevation closes noticeably faster in the afternoon than it does in the morning and can start slamming.
Water running down a door face and into a surface closer body corrodes the internals and the mounting fasteners, and a closer that has been wet repeatedly usually fails at the seal.
None of it is a reason to replace a door. It is a reason to use the right parts and set the door up correctly in the first place.
Local factors we account for in Troy: sun and heat load and heavy rainfall — typical of the Wiregrass.

- Watch the whole cycle, twiceOpening force, sweep speed, latch speed and backcheck. Each is a separate adjustment and each fails differently.
- Rule out the door before blaming the closerA door binding on the frame makes a perfectly good closer look weak, and turning the closer up is the wrong answer.
- Adjust before replacingMany closers we are called to are serviceable and simply out of adjustment. That is a much smaller job and we say so. In the Wiregrass we check tracks and channels for fine sand, which grinds moving parts flat faster than anything else in the state.
- Size the replacement properlyDoor width, weight and exposure decide the power size. An undersized closer will not shut the door; an oversized one shuts out anyone who is not strong.
- Set for people, not just latchingOpening force is checked so the door is usable by everybody, then latch speed is set so it still closes properly.
- Fit a stop where it is neededA door with no stop will destroy its own closer the first time the wind catches it.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of door closer repair in Troy
There is no single price for door closer repair in Troy, because two doors with identical symptoms can need very different work. Here is what makes the difference:
- the size and weight of the door and its exposure to wind
- surface, concealed or floor mounted closer type
- adding overhead stops or hold-open functions
- adjustment versus rebuild versus full replacement
- whether the mounting has to be repaired or reinforced
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Troy.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door closer repair in Troy: questions we get asked
The closer arm on our door is bent. What causes that?
The door was opened past its limit, usually by wind catching it or by someone pushing it hard against a wall. Replacing the arm without adding an overhead stop just means it happens again.
How long do door closers last?
A good quality closer on a properly hung door can run for well over a decade. A cheap closer on a heavy exterior door in Troy might last a couple of years, especially if it is fighting a misaligned door.
Our fire door is propped open. Is that a problem?
Yes, and it is one of the most common code violations we see. A fire door that cannot close and latch is not doing anything. If it gets propped because it is hard to use, that is the problem to solve.
Do door closers need different settings in summer and winter?
They can. The hydraulic fluid thins in heat and thickens in cold, so a closer set perfectly in Troy in August may close too slowly in January. Quality closers hold their setting better across the temperature swing.
My door slams every time. Can that be adjusted?
Almost always. There is a latch speed valve on the closer that controls the last few inches, and it has probably drifted or been set wrong. Adjusting it takes minutes and saves your frame, hinges and hardware from a lot of abuse.
Why is our door so heavy to open now?
Somebody has probably turned the closer up to force a door that was not latching. That is treating a symptom, and it makes the door difficult for customers and staff. Fix the latching problem and the closer can come back to a reasonable setting.
