Most of our Eclectic calls come from Main Street and the AL-63 corridor, though we work the whole Elmore County side of it and get out to Millbrook regularly.
A lot of what we see in Elmore County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.

These are the door handle repair faults we are called out to most often in Eclectic. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.

- A keyed handle will not turn with the keyThe cylinder inside the handle has failed, which is separate from the handle body itself.
- The thumb-turn is stiff but the key side is smoothWear or corrosion isolated to the inside cylinder, which can be replaced on its own.
- The handle turns freely without retracting the latchBroken spindle or a stripped connection between the handle and the latch.
- The handle has developed side-to-side playElongated fixing holes, or through-bolts that have been over-tightened into a hollow stile.

Remnants of Gulf systems still carry serious rain this far inland, and doors on the south and west sides of a house take the brunt of it.
Direct sun degrades the finish on exterior handle sets and cooks the grease out of the mechanism, and on a south or west facing entry the handle usually looks tired years before the door does.
Wind catching a door pulls it out of somebody's hand and slams it, and repeated slamming is what loosens handle mounting screws and eventually oversizes the bore in the door.
None of it is a reason to replace a door. It is a reason to use the right parts and set the door up correctly in the first place.
Local factors we account for in Eclectic: sun and heat load and storm wind — typical of the River Region.

- Separate the handle from the latchA handle that turns without retracting is a different job to a latch that will not move. We check them independently.
- Check the door and strike alignmentA latch dragging on the strike puts load through the handle mechanism and is a common reason handles fail early.
- Repair where it is worth repairingGood hardware often just needs a spring cassette or a spindle, and that is a better outcome than replacing a solid brass set with a builder-grade one.
- Fit correctly to the doorRight backset, right bore, hardware sitting square and pulled up tight to both faces.
- Set the latch engagementThe latch should enter the strike cleanly with the door pushed to. No lifting, no shoulder, no jiggle.
- Match the run where we canOn a commercial run of levers, consistency matters. We fit to match the existing rather than leaving one odd door. We measure the reveal before and after on River Region jobs, so seasonal movement can be told apart from a genuine fault.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of door handle repair in Eclectic
We would rather tell you what drives the price than quote a number that turns out to be wrong once we see the door. On a door handle repair job in Eclectic, the main variables are these:
- repair of the existing set versus full replacement
- whether the bore or backset needs correction
- how many doors are being done at once
- keyed versus non-keyed function
- commercial grade requirements on high-use doors
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Eclectic.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door handle repair in Eclectic: questions we get asked
The handle turns but the door will not open. What is wrong?
The connection between the handle and the latch has broken, usually the spindle or the internal drive. If somebody is stuck behind that door, say so when you call and we will treat it accordingly.
Why does my exterior handle keep corroding?
Exposure. In Elmore County an exterior handle needs a finish rated for it, and cheap plated hardware on a door that gets weather will pit within a couple of years no matter how well it is installed.
How long does a handle replacement take?
Most take under an hour per door in Eclectic. If the bore is worn or the backset does not match, it takes longer because the door itself needs work before the new hardware will sit right.
Do I need to replace the lock to replace the handle?
Not necessarily. On a keyed entry set they are integrated, but on many doors the handle and the deadbolt are separate and you can change one without touching the other.
Why does my door rattle after a new handle was fitted?
The new latch is probably sitting at a slightly different depth than the old one, so the strike no longer holds the door tight. Adjusting the strike fixes it in a few minutes.
My lever handle droops. Can that be repaired?
Yes, usually. The return spring inside the handle body has failed. On decent hardware we can replace the spring cassette; on thin builder-grade sets it is often cheaper to fit a better handle than to rebuild a weak one.
