Elmore is part of our regular Elmore County territory, and between the AL-143 corridor, the Coosa River and the the Coosa River area we are here most weeks.
A lot of what we see in Elmore County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.

These are the door handle repair faults we are called out to most often in Elmore. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- Grinding or gritty feel when you turn itDebris or corrosion inside the mechanism.
- The handle sticks in the retracted positionSeized mechanism or a spring that has broken and jammed.
- A keyed handle will not turn with the keyThe cylinder inside the handle has failed, which is separate from the handle body itself.
- The lever has dropped a few degrees and stayed thereA fatigued return spring in the rose or a worn spindle no longer holding the lever level.
- The inside lever works but the outside one does notA sheared spindle or a split-spindle set with one half stripped at the tang.
- The handle set has left rub marks on the door faceThe rose has loosened and is rotating, which will eventually chew through the finish.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Why door handle repair fails in the River Region
Remnants of Gulf systems still carry serious rain this far inland, and doors on the south and west sides of a house take the brunt of it.
Water running down a door face gets behind the exterior rose and sits against the latch mechanism, which rusts the spring cassette and is why exterior handles fail far more often than interior ones.
Wind catching a door pulls it out of somebody's hand and slams it, and repeated slamming is what loosens handle mounting screws and eventually oversizes the bore in the door.
Knowing that is the difference between a repair that holds through a Elmore summer and one that does not.
Local factors we account for in Elmore: heavy rainfall and storm wind — typical of the River Region.

- Separate the handle from the latchA handle that turns without retracting is a different job to a latch that will not move. We check them independently.
- Check the door before the hardwareA lever that needs force is often fighting a misaligned strike rather than failing on its own.
- Repair where it is worth repairingGood hardware often just needs a spring cassette or a spindle, and that is a better outcome than replacing a solid brass set with a builder-grade one.
- Fit square to the doorBackset, thickness and bore all get checked. A set fitted to an oversized bore will work loose again within weeks. In the River Region we check for both humidity swelling and clay movement, because the two are easy to confuse and need different work.
- Adjust the latch engagementThe door should close and latch with a light push, not a shove.
- Check every handle in the runIf one handle in a house or building has worn out, we look at the others while we are there.

Every door handle repair call in Elmore County is a little different, and the cost follows what the door actually needs:
- repair of the existing set versus full replacement
- how many doors are being done at once
- whether the bore or backset needs correction
- keyed versus non-keyed function
- commercial grade requirements on high-use doors

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door handle repair in Elmore: questions we get asked
Why does my exterior handle keep corroding?
Exposure. In Elmore County an exterior handle needs a finish rated for it, and cheap plated hardware on a door that gets weather will pit within a couple of years no matter how well it is installed.
How long does a handle replacement take?
Most take under an hour per door in Elmore. If the bore is worn or the backset does not match, it takes longer because the door itself needs work before the new hardware will sit right.
Why does my door rattle after a new handle was fitted?
The new latch is probably sitting at a slightly different depth than the old one, so the strike no longer holds the door tight. Adjusting the strike fixes it in a few minutes.
Can you fix an old mortise handle set on a historic door?
Often yes. Old mortise sets were built to be serviced, and the original hardware is usually better made than any replacement. We would rather rebuild it than gut a door for a modern set.
Can you match new handles to my existing hardware?
In most cases. Finish families are reasonably consistent between brands, and for Elmore homes where the hinges and locks are staying, matching the handle finish is usually straightforward.
Do you do commercial handle and lever work?
Yes, including Grade 1 lever sets, classroom and storeroom functions and hardware on doors with closers, where the handle has to work against constant spring pressure.
