Door Lock Repair — Elba, Alabama

Elba sits in Coffee County, and our work here runs from the courthouse square out past the Coffee County Courthouse, with Enterprise and New Brockton close enough that we are usually in the area anyway.

A lot of what we see in Coffee County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.

What Elba customers call us about

These are the door lock repair faults we are called out to most often in Elba. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.

  • The deadbolt throws but the door still pushes openA strike plate fixed only to the jamb casing rather than into the framing behind it.
  • The keyed sliding door handle will not lockThe panel has dropped and the hook latch no longer reaches the keeper.
  • Two locks on the same door need different keysMismatched cylinders from a previous partial replacement, easily re-keyed to one key.
  • The key only works if you lift or lean on the doorThe bolt is binding in the strike because the door is sitting low in the opening.
  • The key turns but nothing movesBroken tailpiece or a failed cam inside the cylinder.
  • The mortise lock has stopped working entirelyInternal case failure; on older doors this is a rebuild rather than a swap.

What we see on door lock repair around Coffee County

The Wiregrass gets punishing summer heat and enough tropical rain that hurricane remnants are a normal part of the year, not an exception. Sally and Michael both did door and window damage this far inland.

Pressure from a storm line pushes a door against its stop and holds the latch bolt under load, and repeatedly forcing a lock in that state wears the latch and the strike far faster than normal use ever would.

Fine grit carried into a keyway by wind and hands wears the pin stacks and the key itself, and worn pins plus a worn key is how people end up with a key that only works if you hold it a certain way.

We see the pattern often enough across Coffee County that we usually know what we are looking at before we arrive.

Local factors we account for in Elba: storm wind and blowing sand — typical of the Wiregrass.

What happens when we get there

  1. Test the door before the lockWe close the door slowly and watch where the latch meets the strike, because a bolt that scrapes on entry is an alignment problem no new lock will solve.
  2. Diagnose the failure pointCylinder, latch mechanism, linkage or strike. Each one feels different under the key, and each one has a different fix. We look at how much sand is reaching the opening, since sometimes a sweep or a threshold change does more good than new hardware.
  3. Fix the cause, not the symptomIf the frame has moved, we correct the strike or the hinge side rather than shimming a lock into a bad opening.
  4. Fit hardware that suits the doorWeight, thickness, backset and exposure all matter, and exterior hardware in this part of Alabama needs the right finish to survive.
  5. Adjust until it works one-handedIf you need a second hand on the door to turn the key, it is not finished, whatever the parts list says.
  6. Hand over the keys and check every oneWe test each key in each lock before leaving.

What affects the cost of door lock repair in Elba

There is no single price for door lock repair in Elba, because two doors with identical symptoms can need very different work. Here is what makes the difference:

  • whether the lock can be rebuilt or needs full replacement
  • whether it is a standard bored lock or a mortise case
  • commercial hardware requirements like fire ratings and lever functions
  • the grade and finish of the hardware you choose
  • the number of doors being keyed alike

Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Elba.

Door lock repair in Elba: questions we get asked

The lock is fine but the door will not stay shut. What is happening?

The latch is not fully engaging the strike, so the door rests closed but is not actually latched. That is an alignment fix and it is worth doing quickly, because a door in that state offers almost no security.

Should I use a single or double cylinder deadbolt?

A double cylinder needs a key on both sides, which stops someone reaching through broken glass but also slows down anyone trying to get out in an emergency. For most Elba homes with glass near the door, we would rather reinforce the glass and the frame and keep a single cylinder inside.

A key broke off in my lock. Can it be saved?

Usually. We extract the broken piece and check the cylinder, but the reason keys break is that the lock was already stiff, so we look at what caused that rather than just handing back a new key.

Can you rekey my locks instead of replacing them?

Yes, as long as the cylinders are in serviceable condition. Rekeying keeps the hardware you already have, makes every old key useless, and costs far less than new locksets on every door.

My deadbolt only locks if I lift the door. Is the lock broken?

Probably not. That is the classic sign the door has dropped on its hinges or the frame has shifted, so the bolt is hitting the strike plate instead of entering it. In Elba we see this constantly, and the fix is usually hinge and strike work rather than new hardware.

Are the locks on my sliding door worth upgrading?

The factory latch on most patio doors is minimal. Adding a foot bolt or an auxiliary track lock is inexpensive and makes a real difference, and it also takes some strain off a latch that may already be marginal.
