Our territory takes in Valley and the communities around it in Chambers County, so calls from Fairfax, Langdale and out by the Chattahoochee Valley mill villages all get the same response.
Door problems in Valley tend to sort into two groups: older homes where the frames and jambs have taken decades of weather, and newer builds where the hardware was the cheapest part of the package and has already given up.

These are the exterior door repair faults we are called out to most often in Valley. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- Drafts you can feel from across the roomCompressed seals and a threshold no longer meeting the door bottom.
- Sidelight or transom glass has foggedFailed insulated units in the fixed panels beside the door.
- The door has to be shouldered to latchThe door has dropped, or the frame has moved and the strike no longer lines up.
- The top edge of the door is unpaintedA common shortcut at installation, and it is the fastest route to a warped slab.
- Soft wood at the bottom of the door or jambRot from standing water; the sooner it is caught the smaller the repair.
- Daylight visible around the closed doorFailed weatherstrip, a dropped door, or a frame out of square.

East central Alabama runs humid most of the year with mild winters, so wood movement is gradual but constant rather than dramatic.
Long humid periods swell wood entry doors, and a swollen door binds against the frame and puts load through hinges, latch and lock every time it is used.
Grit at the threshold grinds the door sweep as the door closes over it, and a worn sweep is the most common reason an otherwise sound exterior door starts letting in air, water and insects.
None of it is a reason to replace a door. It is a reason to use the right parts and set the door up correctly in the first place.
Local factors we account for in Valley: sustained humidity and grit and dust — typical of east central Alabama.

- Check it in the closed position firstAn exterior door only has to work in one position. We look at how it sits shut before we look at how it swings.
- Follow the waterStaining, rot and rust all point uphill to an entry point. We find that before repairing anything downstream of it.
- Correct the geometry before the sealsWeatherstrip cannot fix an inconsistent gap. The door has to be sitting right before sealing it means anything.
- Fit for the exposureStainless fixings, marine-grade or coated hardware and the correct sweep, depending on how much weather the opening takes.
- Make the lock work without forceThe deadbolt should throw fully with the door simply closed. If you are leaning on it, the geometry is still wrong. We look at how the opening sits across the seasons rather than just today, because a one-day adjustment tends not to survive the year.
- Water-test itA hose on the closed door tells you more than any inspection, and it is how we confirm the leak is actually gone.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of exterior door repair in Valley
What a exterior door repair job costs comes down to a handful of things, and we would rather be straight about them up front:
- the material of the door: wood, fiberglass or steel
- weatherstrip and threshold work versus structural repair
- security reinforcement and hardware upgrades
- whether the frame has rot that needs splicing
- sidelight and transom glass replacement
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Valley.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Exterior door repair in Valley: questions we get asked
Can you fix a front door that has warped?
Depends on how far. Mild warping can often be handled with hinge and strike adjustment and better weatherstrip. Severe warping on a solid wood slab usually means replacing the slab, which can be hung in the existing frame.
The bottom of my wooden front door is rotting. Can it be saved?
Often yes, if it is caught early enough. The bottom rail can be repaired and the door refinished. What matters more is fixing the water that caused it, or the repair rots out the same way.
I can see daylight around my front door. Is that just weatherstrip?
Sometimes, but check whether the gap is even. A consistent gap all the way around is a weatherstrip job. A gap that is wide at one corner and tight at another means the door or frame has moved, and new weatherstrip will not close it.
My sidelight glass has fogged up. Can that be replaced separately?
Yes. Sidelights and transoms use insulated glass units that can be replaced on their own, without touching the door.
Why does my front door stick in summer and not in winter?
Seasonal movement in the door and the frame. In Valley's humid months a wood door takes on moisture and grows slightly, and a door that already had tight clearance starts binding.
My steel door is rusting at the bottom. Do I need a new door?
Not necessarily. Steel door bottoms can be rebuilt, and the real issue is why water is sitting there. If the frame and skin above are sound, the repair is worth doing.
