Sliding Door Repair — Andalusia, Alabama

If you are anywhere between Downtown Andalusia and the courthouse square, or out toward the Covington County Courthouse square, we cover it, along with the rest of Covington County.

The mix of housing here matters for door work. Older Andalusia homes have wood frames and hardware worth repairing rather than replacing, while newer construction tends to have vinyl and aluminum systems where the moving parts wear out long before anything else does.

Common sliding door repair faults in Covington County

These are the sliding door repair faults we are called out to most often in Andalusia. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.

  • Water on the floor after heavy rainBlocked weep holes in the sill, so the track fills and backs up over the interior lip.
  • The track has a raised lip you can catch a fingernail onAluminium track peened over by a panel that has been running on bare wheel housings.
  • It jumps off the trackThe panel has dropped low enough that it is no longer captured by the head channel, or the roller adjustment screws have backed out.
  • You can lift the panel visibly in its openingExcess head clearance from a sagging header, which is what lets it jump the track.
  • Cold air pouring in around the edgesCollapsed weatherstrip and worn pile seals, and often a gap the panel misalignment created.
  • Condensation between the glass panesFailed insulated glass seal in the panel; the glass unit itself needs replacement.

What we see on sliding door repair around Covington County

The Wiregrass gets punishing summer heat and enough tropical rain that hurricane remnants are a normal part of the year, not an exception. Sally and Michael both did door and window damage this far inland.

Sliding door sills are designed to collect water and drain it back outside through weep holes, and after a heavy rain those weeps are exactly where debris ends up, so the track fills, the water backs over the interior lip, and the roller assemblies sit in standing water.

Sun loading on a west-facing patio slider expands the aluminum frame through the afternoon and degrades the vinyl weatherstrip and the glazing gaskets, so the door that slides fine at nine in the morning is tight by four.

It is why the same repair done properly in Andalusia lasts, and the same repair done cheaply does not.

Local factors we account for in Andalusia: heavy rainfall and sun and heat load — typical of the Wiregrass.

What happens when we get there

  1. Watch it move before touching anythingWe run the door end to end and listen. Where the noise starts and where the effort peaks tells us which roller has gone.
  2. Lift the panel out and inspect itThe wheels come off the housings and get checked for flat spots, seized bearings and housings that have been running on bare metal.
  3. Match the hardwareSliding door rollers are not universal. We identify the manufacturer and panel weight and fit the right tandem assembly rather than the closest thing on the truck.
  4. Bring the running surface backA pitted or peened track will destroy new rollers in a season, so it gets dressed, capped or replaced before anything goes back in.
  5. Set and adjustThe panel goes back in, gets plumbed, and the roller height is set so the door latches and seals along its whole edge.
  6. Check the weep holes before we goA door that slides beautifully but drains badly will still put water on your floor, so the drainage gets cleared and tested. In the Wiregrass we check tracks and channels for fine sand, which grinds moving parts flat faster than anything else in the state.

What affects the cost of sliding door repair in Andalusia

Every sliding door repair call in Covington County is a little different, and the cost follows what the door actually needs:

  • how many panels the system has, since three and four panel doors take longer to set
  • the age of the door and whether replacement hardware is still made for it
  • how much damage the worn track has taken before the call
  • the size and weight of the panel, since heavy insulated glass units need heavier assemblies
  • whether the fix is rollers only or rollers plus track repair

Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Andalusia.

Sliding door repair in Andalusia: questions we get asked

Can a sliding door that has stopped rolling be fixed, or does it need replacing?

Almost always fixed. The frame and glass are usually fine and it is the two small roller assemblies underneath that have failed. Replacing a whole patio door in Andalusia is a several thousand dollar job; rebuilding the rollers and track is a fraction of that and gets you a door that rolls better than it has in years.

My door came off the track. Did I break something?

Usually not. A panel comes out of the track when it has dropped low enough that the head channel no longer holds it, which means the rollers were already worn or the adjustment screws backed out. Putting it back without correcting the height means it will happen again.

Do you work on the big multi-panel and stacking patio doors?

Yes. Those systems put a lot of weight on each roller and they are less forgiving of a frame that is even slightly out of square, so alignment work matters more on them than on a standard two-panel door.

Is there anything I can do to make my sliding door last longer?

Vacuum the track rather than sweeping it, keep silicone rather than oil-based lubricant on the running surface, and check that the weep holes at the bottom of the sill are open. Oil-based products in Andalusia collect dust and grit and turn into grinding paste.

Can you fix the lock without fixing the door?

Sometimes, but if the door has settled, a new lock will not line up with the keeper any better than the old one did. We check the panel alignment first, because a lock that will not catch is often a symptom rather than the actual problem.

What does it mean when there is water pooling in the track?

The weep holes that drain the sill are blocked. It is one of the most common causes of water on the floor inside, and it is also one of the easiest things to fix, but if it sits long enough it rusts the roller assemblies out.
