Andalusia is part of our regular Covington County territory, and between Downtown Andalusia, the courthouse square and the the Covington County Courthouse square area we are here most weeks.
A lot of what we see in Covington County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.

These are the door lock repair faults we are called out to most often in Andalusia. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- Corrosion visible around the cylinder faceSalt or moisture attacking the internals, which will seize the lock if it is not addressed.
- The key turns but nothing movesBroken tailpiece or a failed cam inside the cylinder.
- A key broke off in the cylinderFatigued key metal, often after months of a lock that was already stiff.
- The knob turns but the door stays shutBroken internal linkage between the knob and the latch.
- The deadbolt throws but the door still pushes openA strike plate fixed only to the jamb casing rather than into the framing behind it.
- The key only works if you lift or lean on the doorThe bolt is binding in the strike because the door is sitting low in the opening.

The Wiregrass gets punishing summer heat and enough tropical rain that hurricane remnants are a normal part of the year, not an exception. Sally and Michael both did door and window damage this far inland.
Pressure from a storm line pushes a door against its stop and holds the latch bolt under load, and repeatedly forcing a lock in that state wears the latch and the strike far faster than normal use ever would.
Water running down a door face finds its way into the lock body on any door without an adequate drip cap, and the internal springs in a latch mechanism rust and lose tension long before anything visible happens on the outside.
None of it is a reason to replace a door. It is a reason to use the right parts and set the door up correctly in the first place.
Local factors we account for in Andalusia: storm wind and heavy rainfall — typical of the Wiregrass.

- Watch the bolt meet the strikeWe close the door slowly and see where the bolt lands. Most lock complaints are alignment complaints.
- Work from the key inwardThe key, then the cylinder, then the tailpiece, then the latch. Testing in order stops us replacing parts that were fine.
- Correct what movedIf the door has dropped or the frame has shifted, that gets fixed first. Filing the strike to fit a moved door just buys a few months. We look at how much sand is reaching the opening, since sometimes a sweep or a threshold change does more good than new hardware.
- Fit for the exposure, not the price listDoor thickness, backset and how much weather the opening sees all decide the hardware. Interior-grade parts on an exposed door fail fast.
- Set the throw and the engagementThe bolt should extend fully with the door closed and no hand pressure on it, and the latch should catch without a push.
- Test every key in every lockIncluding the spares. Keys that were cut from copies are a common cause of a lock that feels rough.

Every door lock repair call in Covington County is a little different, and the cost follows what the door actually needs:
- whether it is a standard bored lock or a mortise case
- the number of doors being keyed alike
- whether the lock can be rebuilt or needs full replacement
- the grade and finish of the hardware you choose
- whether the frame or strike also needs correction
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Andalusia.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door lock repair in Andalusia: questions we get asked
The lock is fine but the door will not stay shut. What is happening?
The latch is not fully engaging the strike, so the door rests closed but is not actually latched. That is an alignment fix and it is worth doing quickly, because a door in that state offers almost no security.
Are the locks on my sliding door worth upgrading?
The factory latch on most patio doors is minimal. Adding a foot bolt or an auxiliary track lock is inexpensive and makes a real difference, and it also takes some strain off a latch that may already be marginal.
Should I use a single or double cylinder deadbolt?
A double cylinder needs a key on both sides, which stops someone reaching through broken glass but also slows down anyone trying to get out in an emergency. For most Andalusia homes with glass near the door, we would rather reinforce the glass and the frame and keep a single cylinder inside.
How do I stop my exterior lock from freezing?
Keep moisture out of the cylinder. In Covington County the freezes that cause it come with damp air, and a dry lubricant plus a functioning door sweep and drip cap does more good than anything you can put in the keyway after the fact.
A key broke off in my lock. Can it be saved?
Usually. We extract the broken piece and check the cylinder, but the reason keys break is that the lock was already stiff, so we look at what caused that rather than just handing back a new key.
My deadbolt only locks if I lift the door. Is the lock broken?
Probably not. That is the classic sign the door has dropped on its hinges or the frame has shifted, so the bolt is hitting the strike plate instead of entering it. In Andalusia we see this constantly, and the fix is usually hinge and strike work rather than new hardware.
